Tradition Mortgage Steamrolls - Lake Cowgirl Wins

by Pete Waggoner

Bloomington, MN - Lake Cowgirl and Pull Tab Sports faced off both in search of their first win of the season.  In a well played and fast paced game, Lake Cowgirl skated to a 5-2 win to even their Celly League record to 1-1.  Katelyn Roberts had a goal and two assists including the game winning goal to propel her team to the victory.

Pull Tab Sports (1-1) took its first lead of the season on a goal by Hannah Chorske just three minutes into the game. Chorske received a beautiful feed from Emily Zumwinkle to complete the first goal. That held up for 16 minutes and after a series of high quality scoring changes, Maddie Clough answered for Lake Cowgirl 15 minutes later. A knuckleball shot ricocheted off the stick of goaltender Alllie Morse and into the back of the net.

Lake Cowgirl (1-1)  tallied its second goal and first lead of the night thanks to a snipe from defender Maggie Flaherty. In the closing seconds of the opening half, Zumwinkle collected her second point of the night, a goal that would equalize the game for Pull Tab Sports at two goals apiece.

The play continued with its torrid pace into the second half and Lake Cowgirl would stick with the ebbs and flows of the game and they were rewarded with three straight goals.  Roberts, a Penn State Nittany Lion, scored her team’s third goal of the game which would hold up as the game winner against fellow Lion and goaltender Josie Bothun with 22 minutes remaining in the half.

“Josie (Bothum), she’s a  Penn-Stater, she still plays so I was just coming down, chipped  around the D,” said Roberts after the game. “I just ripped the puck and Josie is a great goalie so it was more of a hope and a prayer but it hit the back of the net”

Taylor Koeppl scored her first goal of The Celly League season with a goal from the greasy area by the top of the slot. Shae Messner rounded out the scoring for Lake Cowgirl with a rebound goal in the blue paint to close the game out at 5-2.
