Tradition Black Leans on Stellar Goaltending to Blank Hepp's Salt 4-0
If Tuesday night's finale of Celly, Dangle and Next Wave action proved anything, it's that summer hockey doesn't always have to be wide open.
In a game featuring two teams desperate to climb the Celly League standings, Tradition Black combined timely scoring with outstanding goaltending to earn a 4-0 victory over Hepp's Salt at Braemar Arena.
The final score may suggest a comfortable win, but anyone who watched the game knows otherwise.
Hepp's Salt generated quality chances throughout the night and actually outshot Tradition Black 21-17. The difference wasn't puck possession or offensive zone time. It was what happened when the puck arrived at the net.
Bemidji State goaltenders Kaitlin Groess and Ashlyn Hazelett delivered one of the finest tandem performances of the summer, combining for a 21-save shutout while repeatedly turning aside dangerous scoring opportunities that could have completely changed the complexion of the game.
Just over five minutes into the opening half, Ruby Rauk found open ice off a setup from Casey Coffey to give Tradition a 1-0 lead. While the scoreboard favored Tradition, the remainder of the half belonged to the goaltenders as both teams settled into a disciplined, physical contest where every scoring chance had to be earned.
The second half remained tight until Tradition Black found another gear. Addison Andre doubled the advantage after Autumn Cooper and Chloe King combined on the play before King added one of her own less than fifteen minutes later, finishing a feed from Rauk to stretch the lead to 3-0.
With Hepp's Salt continuing to push offensively, Groess and Hazelett answered every challenge. King eventually sealed the victory with her second goal of the evening, striking with just over three minutes remaining to cap the 4-0 decision.
While the offense finished the opportunities it created, Tuesday belonged to the defensive side of the puck. Tradition Black defended with structure, limited second-chance opportunities and trusted its goaltenders to handle everything else. Groess and Hazelett did exactly that, making several difficult saves through traffic, controlling rebounds and frustrating a Hepp's Salt attack that created far more quality looks than the final score would indicate.
Rauk finished with a goal and an assist, while King matched her with two goals. Casey Coffey, Autumn Cooper and Chloe King each added assists as Tradition generated balanced scoring throughout the lineup.
The victory pulls Tradition Black even with Hepp's Salt in the standings as both clubs now sit with four points, locked together in third and fourth place behind league champion Ace Hardware and second-place Lake Cowboy.
For Tradition Black, it was another reminder that championship-caliber hockey isn't always built around scoring.
Sometimes it's built from the crease out.
On Tuesday night, Groess and Hazelett were the difference. Their poise, positioning and ability to come through during Hepp's Salt's best offensive stretches allowed Tradition Black to stay patient until its offense gradually pulled away. In a game that was much closer than the score would suggest, the Beavers tandem authored one of the most impressive goaltending performances of the Celly League season.
