by Pete Waggoner

Edina, MN - The Celly League opened its second season of play Tuesday night from Braemar Arena in Edina, MN with a pair of games, featuring four of the five teams in the league.  TRIA defeated Tradition Mortgage 5-3 and Lake Cowgirl was victorious over Ace Hardware by a score of 6-3.

TRIA 5 Tradition Mortgage 2

St. Thomas University’s Chloe Boreen scored two goals while Assumption’s Lily Hunst added two assists to lead TRIA (1-0)  to the 5-3 win over Tradition Mortgage (0-1). Boreen was a regular in the stands at the Bloomington Ice Garden last year watching her sister Abby play in the inaugural season of the Celly.

Abby Boreen played her rookie season with PWHL Minnesota this past season and was a member of the first Walter Cup Championship team.  While Chloe is her own player, she  was able to take in a number of games.  “I came to probably every game to support my sister and she said she had a blast playing with her teammates with the Gophers,” Boreen said.  “I just think it is super fun to play out here with my future St. Thomas teammates.”

The game one experience provided her an opportunity to play with players that are veterans of Division I college hockey and the experience did not fall short on Boreen as she not only soaked it in but made a difference on the scoresheet in her first game.

“It was definitely cool and it was definitely cool to play with all of these college girls and just getting to that next level and just starting a new chapter in college hockey,” Boreen said after the game in the post-game press scrum.  “I mean, it was really cool and really fun playing with them.”

Joining Boreen on the TRIA team from St. Thomas University is Ellah Hause.  There are 13 players in the Celly League from STU.  “I am super happy to be playing at St. Thomas this year and it’s a great group of girls and great college coaches and I am just excited to get started,” Boreen said.

Ryane Kearns of Long Island University and Stella Retrum of Penn State also dented the twine for TRIA as they opened a 4-1 lead. Minnesota State Mankato’s Lauren Zawoyski scored an empty netter.  Lily Fetch (Maine), Meredith Jensen (Dartmouth), and Ella Huber (Minnesota) scored for Tradition Mortgage.

TRIA’s Hailey Hanson (Minnesota State Mankato) stopped 16 of 17 shots saves in the first half to set the tone for her team in the win while Kaitlin Groess (Bemidji State University) turned aside 7 of 9 Tradition Mortgage shots.

Lake Cowgirl 6 Ace Hardware 3

Jada Habish (UConn) and Katelyn Roberts (Penn State) had 2 goals to lead Lake Cowgirl to a 6-3 win over Ace Hardware in the second game of the opening night of the Celly League.  Lake Cowgirl had a balanced attack with 5 players picking up 2 points on the game.  Joining Habish and Roberts with 2 points in the game were Maddy Clough (St. Thomas) 1g-1a, Josie Hemp (Vermont) 2a, and Peyton Hemp (Minnesota) 2a.  Sedona Blair (New Hampshire) made 32 saves to earn the win in goal as she played the full game for Lake Cowgirl (1-0).

Three different goal players scored for Ace Hardware who fell to 0-1 on the season.
