Next Wave Showcase Offers a Glimpse Into Minnesota Girls Hockey's Bright Future
Tuesday night's schedule at Braemar Arena featured more than just another game.
Sandwiched between the Celly League contests was the first of two Next Wave Showcase game, bringing together many of Minnesota's top girls hockey players from the graduating Class of 2030. While the Celly and Dangle Leagues feature current high school and collegiate players, the Next Wave provides an early look at the athletes who will soon follow in their footsteps.
More importantly, it gives those players an opportunity to learn from college coaches who serve behind the benches. Every shift becomes more than a game. It becomes a classroom where players experience the pace, decision making and details expected at the next level.
If Tuesday's opener was any indication, Minnesota girls hockey has an incredibly bright future.
Next Wave TCO Bears skated to a 3-1 victory over Next Wave RE/MAX Advantage Plus in a game that showcased outstanding skating, puck movement and hockey IQ from both teams. While the score favored the Bears, both clubs displayed the type of compete level and skill that made it easy to forget these players are still years away from graduating high school.
Lucy Skoglund opened the scoring midway through the first half after Elizabeth Salonek found her in stride, giving TCO a 1-0 lead for the Bears. As the half wound toward its conclusion, Skoglund struck again, finishing a passing play from Piper Nyberg and Elsie Remitz with just 36 seconds remaining to send the Bears into halftime carrying a 2-0 advantage.
RE/MAX Advantage Plus refused to go away and midway through the second half, Rylee Pettersen finished a rush created by Briley Stanich to cut the deficit to one and breathe life into the comeback effort.
Less than five minutes later the Bears answered. Piper Nyberg restored the two-goal cushion after Brynli Bunde and Maeve McDonough combined on the setup, and TCO protected the lead the rest of the way to secure the 3-1 exhibition victory.
The pace remained high throughout the sixty minutes as the Bears finished with a narrow 22-18 edge in shots, while both teams demonstrated the speed and creativity that has become synonymous with Minnesota girls hockey.
Lucy Skoglund earned first-star honors after scoring twice, while Piper Nyberg finished with a goal and an assist. Elizabeth Salonek, Elsie Remitz, Brynli Bunde and Maeve McDonough each contributed assists in the balanced offensive effort.
In goal, Kelcie Wicklund and Logan Tupa combined for a strong performance for the Bears, while RE/MAX Advantage Plus goaltenders Payton Amendola and Leah Lavender kept the game within reach with several quality saves against sustained pressure.
The final score mattered, but Tuesday's showcase was about something much bigger as it was an opportunity for young players to compete alongside many of the state's best in their age group, receive instruction from college coaches and experience the pace and expectations that await them in the years ahead.
For everyone in attendance, it also served as a reminder that the future of the Celly League, the Dangle League and Minnesota girls high school hockey is already taking shape. Judging by the talent on the ice Tuesday night, that future looks exceptionally promising.
